Chemotherapy Support Group
Second Thursday of each month; 3:00pm Chemotherapy treatment can take a toll on a person’s health—both physically and mentally. Patients, as well as their caregivers and loved ones, can feel isolated, frustrated and alone. Attending a support group provides individuals the opportunity to receive and offer support. By meeting regularly, participants help one another face and overcome common challenges by sharing experiences and encouraging one another. Participation is open to those currently receiving chemotherapy treatment as well as to those who have completed treatment. Loved ones and caregivers are welcome! The Latest Cancer Treatments Aren't Always Prescribed by Doctors! Cancer can rob a woman of her energy, appetite and strength. But it doesn't have to take away her self-confidence! Look Good...Feel Better® is a free, non-medical, program that teaches beauty techniques to women cancer patients in active treatment to help them combat the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. Trained, volunteer cosmetologists teach women how to cope with skin changes and hair loss using cosmetics and skin care products. Learn make-up tips, skin and nail care tips, as well as suggestions for wits, turbans, and scarves. Participants receive complimnentary makeup kits. Any patient who has had lymph nodes removed or radiated in the under arm or groin regions is at risk for developing Lymphedema--chronic swelling of an arm or leg. Join Mercy experts and learn about the function of the lymphatic system, how to prevent and treat lymphedema, the warning signs of lymphedema and how to respond. Patients, caregivers, and health care practitioners are welcome!

A comprehensive, 8-session group program led by experts that use a positive behavioral change approach that teaches you how to quit smoking for good. The program is led by a Smoking Cessation Specialist and has experienced a phenomenal success rate. For man smokers, especially those who have tried to quit before, group support can make the difference in helping to stay smoke-free. Special focus is given to: developing a personalized quitting plan, dealing with recovery symptoms, controlling weight, reducing stress through relaxation techniques (that work), being ready to fight those urges to return to smoking, and non-nicotine replacement therapies such as medication and acupuncture. Family to Family
Thursdays, beginning January 31st; 6:00-8:00pm Mercy Hospital; Room 425 Mercy Hospital and NAMI-Metro-Suburban present Family to Family. Family to Family is a FREE 12-week program, sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), for family members and caregivers of individuals living with mental illness. The curriculum balances educational materials and skill training with self-care, emotional support, and empowerment and is taught by trained family members. The course covers the following topics: Learning about feelings, learning about facts, diagnosis, and cause; introduction to schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, diagnosis, and cause; major depression, mania, panic/anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and cause; bi-polar, diagnosis and cause; basics about the brain; problem solving skills workshop; medication review; what it is like to be mentally ill; gupport groups and self-care and more. Sarcoma Support Group Saturdays, 11:00am Next dates: January 26th, March 16th, June 8th, September 14th and December 14th Sarcoma is a rare cancer that arises from connective tissues. About 12,000 new cases are diagnosed each year and about 5,000 people die each year from sarcoma. Mercy’s Sarcoma Support Group offers an opportunity to connect with others affected by sarcoma, share information and experiences, as well as receive encouragement and support. Us TOO Prostate Support Group offers a meeting place for men living with prostate cancer and their families. The meetings provide unbiased information from experts in areas related to prostate cancer, including surgery, radiation, medications, nutrition, and psychology. Birth Place Tour
All sessions are from 6:30pm – 9pm Breastfeeding Basics Bringing Home Baby Mercy Hospital, 3rd Floor, The Birth PlaceSafe Ride, First Ride, Every Ride. One of the very first important decisions you will make as a parent is a car safety seat for your new arrival. Yet statistics show that up to 90 percent of car seats are installed incorrectly. Soon to be moms and dads are invited to take advantage of "Bringing Home Baby," a free program at Mercy providing tips for proper usage of your new baby's car safety seat, and inspection of your car seat and vehicle to verify and teach proper installation. Classes are taught by Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians and are available in English and Spanish. Convertible car seats are also available, with a $25 cash donation to the program.
Prenatal "Power Hour" Fitness Cost: $15 per class. Reduced rate with 6-week session registration. Classes consist of cardiovascular workouts as well as full body strengthening with abdominal and pelvic floor activation (kegels) in preparation for labor and delivery. Classes are based on the most recent American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists guidelines and require documented clearance from your health care provider. Any fitness level and trimester of pregnancy are welcome! Don't forget to bring water--hydration is an important part of your fitness routine during pregnancy!
