Mercy Hospital Earns Recertification as a Primary Stroke Center
By the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP)
Chicago, IL: Mercy Hospital & Medical Center was recently awarded Primary Stroke Certification from the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP), an independent, accreditation organization, after an extensive review of Mercy’s quality and safety standards.
“Mercy Hospital clearly demonstrates a commitment to quality patient care,” said Michael Zarski, CEO of HFAP. “We base our decision on federal standards, as well as recognized national standards for patient safety, quality improvement, and environmental safety. Once again, Mercy met or exceeded standards in every case.”
Mercy Hospital utilizes a specific Stroke treatment protocol; the specially trained multidisciplinary staff takes a comprehensive approach to stroke care that ensures that patients receive the right intervention at the right time. As a leader in stroke care, Mercy continues to participate in numerous clinical trials, offering patients the most up-to-date care.
“By awarding us Stroke Certification, HFAP has once again recognized our commitment to providing outstanding care to our patients and our community. From the Emergency Room to rehabilitation and support, patients receive the most advanced treatment for stroke here at Mercy,” said Dr. Jeffrey Kramer, Mercy’s chief of Neurology and Medical Director of Mercy’s Stroke Program. The Mercy Stroke Center provides fast and accurate diagnosis and treatment. However, it’s important to know that every minute counts when it comes to stroke. When experiencing any signs and symptoms of stroke, individuals should immediately call 911. By seeking medical treatment quickly, within one to four hours of the onset of stroke symptoms, patients may be a candidate for TPA, a clot busing drug that when administered with four and a half hours of the onset of symptoms minimizes the effects of a stroke, said Dr. Kramer.
