Mercy’s Breast & Women’s Healthcare Center Designated Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
Chicago, IL: The Breast & Women’s Healthcare Center at Mercy Hospital & Medical Center was recently designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. This certification from the American College of Radiology (ACR) recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound guided breast biopsy.
“Here at Mercy, our seasoned team of radiologists, oncologists, and surgeons specialize in detecting breast cancer in the earliest stages, when it is most treatable,” said Alejandra Perez-Tamayo, MD, Chief of Surgery and Surgical Director of Mercy's Breast & Women’s Healthcare Center.
Mercy offers complete state-of-the-art digital mammography and diagnostic facilities to ensure that patients receive the very best in quality breast screening and treatment. Mercy experts utilize a range of techniques to ensure the accuracy of a patient’s diagnosis, including breast ultrasound, breast MRI, CT, PET imaging, stereotactic biopsy, and sentinel lymph node biopsy. Furthermore, our experts utilize the R2 ImageChecker, a state-of-the-art computer assisted detection system for mammograms that draws attention to subtle changes in breast tissue by offering state-of-the-art technologies and convenience.
“We believe all women can benefit from the clearer images available with digital mammography, in particular women with dense breast tissue. As dense breast tissue and cancerous cells both appear white on traditional film mammograms, the ability to increase the contrast when imaging is most important helps physicians to distinguish between cancer and normal breast tissue,” said Carey Weiss, MD, Co-Medical Director of Mercy's Breast & Women’s Healthcare Center.
In order to earn accreditation, peer-review evaluations are conducted in each cancer care area by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Areas that the ACR takes into consideration for high practice standards include image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.
“Being recognized as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology shows our commitment to helping the women of Chicago receive the very best care by offering a high quality of breast imaging,"adds Dr. Perez-Tamayo.
The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 36,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services.
