Mercy Hospital Honors Past Chairman of its Board of Directors
Chicago, IL: At Mercy’s Annual Holiday Toast Celebration, former board Chairman John McCarthy was honored for his commitment to Mercy. John McCarthy first joined the Mercy Hospital Board of Directors in 1997 and served until 2005. In 2006, John rejoined Mercy’s Board of Directors and served as Chairman until December 2013.
During his time on the board at Mercy, John has judiciously used both his status as a community leader and his professional expertise to the benefit of Mercy Hospital and all those we serve. John’s unique connection to Mercy Hospital dates back many years to his aunt, Sister Huberta McCarthy, RSM, at one-time Mother Provincial of Sisters of Mercy and a legendary leader of Mercy Hospital, who was integral in involving John in Mercy and preparing him for his future leadership roles. During his time as Board Chair, John was instrumental in fund and friend raising and the 2012 affiliation of Mercy to Trinity Health.
In addition to his involvement with the Mercy Hospital Board of Directors, John also serves on several boards including Transportation Industry boards, Civic Organizations and Not for Profit boards including St. Xavier University where he was a trustee and past Chairman, Catholic Charities, Heartland Alliance and countless other organizations.
John’s career began over 40 years ago at Continental Air Transport, where he held numerous roles over the years including Director or Marketing and Sales, Vice President and Executive Vice President until assuming the role of President and CEO in 1987. During this time the company expanded beyond its airport operation and into other related transportation services. In 1983, Mr. McCarthy was a part of an investor group that purchased the company from Checker Motors of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
A graduate of St. Ignatius High School of Chicago, Mr. McCarthy received his B.S. in Commerce from DePaul University of Chicago and his MBA from Loyola University Chicago.
