New Spine & Back Care at Mercy Offers Relief
Chicago, IL: Did you know that four out of five adults experience at least one bout of back pain at some time during their lifetime? In fact, low back pain is the third leading cause of trips to the doctor in the United States. The good news is that Mercy is stepping up to the challenge.
Mercy Hospital’s new Spine & Back Care program, led by Chiropractic Physician Michael Allgeier, DC, is the first of its kind in the Midwest and formally applies a platform of management spanning the entire spectrum of care for spine patients from their initial entry into care, through their discharge following conservative or surgical management.
“The goals of the program are to significantly improve clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction, decrease overall costs, and provide a clear comprehensive approach for the management of these often complex cases,” said Dr. Allgeier, Medical Director of Mercy Spine & Back Care.
Mercy’s Spine & Back Care provides comprehensive, patient-centered care for acute and chronic back pain, neck pain, and related disease like sciatica. Using an advanced, cross-disciplinary pathway, Mercy experts create an individualized care plan for each patient, within a standardized model of care, helping them find relief. Patients benefit from having access to experts from multiple disciplines throughout the hospital.
“We want to provide the best treatment options for our patients to help relieve their pain. Since we began the program in July of 2013, we have been seeing patient’s pain levels decrease on average by over 50% within 2-3 weeks”, said Dr. Allgeier. “Patients are able to do a lot more in a short amount of time, too. Patients have averaged 60% improvement in function in 2-3 weeks which means patients are quickly overcoming their pain and returning to all of their normal activities.”
