Mercy Hospital & Medical Center Opens New Cancer Center
State-of-the-art equipment enables more precise and effective radiation therapy
Chicago, IL—(Chicago, IL) Mercy Hospital & Medical Center had opened its doors to its newest 4,500 square foot addition, the Mercy Cancer Center. The Mercy Cancer Center offers a comforting, healing environment and the most advanced cancer treatment. It is home to the hospital’s new linear accelerator, a state-of-the-art piece of equipment that allows physicians to provide the most precise and effective radiation therapy.
“The linear accelerator delivers a very targeted dose of external beam radiation to cancerous tumors, while minimizing exposure to surrounding tissues. It is especially effective at treating prostate, head and neck, abdominal, lung and rectal cancers,” says Dr. Kanji, Medical Director of the Mercy Cancer Center. “The treatment delivered by the linear accelerator is so targeted, patients have fewer side effects and treatment times are much reduced. Physicians also have a higher control rate and that leads to higher cure rates.”
“This new addition to our hospital offers all of our patients seeking cancer treatment enhanced treatment options in a healing environment,” stated Sister Sheila Lyne, RSM, President and CEO of Mercy Hospital and Medical Center.
The purchase of the new equipment and construction of the new center was made possible by a generous gift from the estate of Jen-Hung Chao, MD, a longtime Mercy physician and former director of Radiation Therapy, and a $500,000 matching grant from the local- Chicago based Coleman Foundation. The full Coleman Foundation grant was dependent upon Mercy raising $250,000 toward the matching grant. Mercy employees, physicians, board members and friends joined together, and through their generosity, this goal was realized.
Mercy has long been a leader in radiation therapy, as it was the home of Chicago’s first-ever radiation department. Mercy’s new Cancer Center furthers its commitment to leading-edge cancer treatment for its patients and the community.
