If you have ever experienced an aching back, you're not alone. Back pain is one of the most common ailments in the United States, with eight out of 10 people affected at some point in their lives. Back pain may be common, but each case is unique and requires personalized attention. Mercy Spine & Back Care specialists are redefining back care for the Chicago area with a proven, patient-focused approach to each evaluation, diagnosis and treatment plan.

Mercy's spine and back specialists treat the full range of back and neck pain and have expertise in the following conditions:

  • Acute & chronic low back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Spine, back, neck pain related to arthritis
  • Degenerative disorders of the spine, including osteoporosis, spinal stenosis, spondylosis and degerative disc disease
  • Nerve pain
  • Herniated disc
  • Scoliosis (curvature of the spine)
  • Spinal deformities, including adult and pediatric scoliosis and kyphosis
  • Spinal cord injuries
Unlike many back programs, Mercy Spine & Back Care utilizes a truly multidisciplinary approach that provides patients the full spectrum of care options. At the center of the Spine & Back Care program is a new kind of back pain specialist, known as a primary spine specialist (PSP). This specially trained expert oversees patients' care from the first appointment through diagnosis, treatment and recovery, ensuring responsive, coordinated care.

By focusing on the unique characteristics of each case and pinpointing the most appropriate treatment plan, we offer patients relief from chronic and acute spine and back pain and ensure that only those few patients who cannot find relief through non-surgical treatment need undergo surgery.

Mercy's Spine & Back Care experts understand how distruptive living with pain can be, and so prompt, responsive care is a hallmark of our program. Patients receive an appointment with a specially trained spine specialist within 48 hours of the initial call, and a focus on fast recovery and preventing future occurrences helps people get back to enjoying their lives as quickly as possible.
Spine & Back Care at Mercy provides the full range of treatment options, with most available in convenient, community-based outpatient settings. Our experts will determine the most appropriate treatment course based on each patient's specific needs, with an emphasis on fast recovery and prevention. Treatment options include:

  • Spinal manipulation/spinal adjustment
  • Specific exercises tailored to your unique needs
  • Myofacial treatment
  • Physical/Occupational therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Massage therapy
  • Neurodynamic exercises
  • General home exercises

The vast majority of back pain does not require surgical treatment, but when surgery is required, patients have access to surgeons at Mercy who specialize in the most up-to-date surgical interventions and minimally invasive procedures. Also, because Spine & Back Care at Mercy specializes in highly personalized evaluation, our experts can quickly determine which patients require surgical evaluation and make a referral to a surgeon sooner than other programs.
