Mercy Names New Chairman of Surgery
General Surgeon, Rami E. Lutfi, MD to lead department

Chicago IL:  General surgeon, Rami E. Lutfi, M.D. has been appointed the new Chairman of Surgery at Mercy Hospital.  Dr. Lutfi joined Mercy’s Medical Staff in 2007 where he currently serves as Medical Director of Mercy’s Lap-Band Program.  In this role, Dr. Lutfi will be responsible for building the department of surgery by working with primary care physicians as well as specialists to improve the surgical process and optimize quality and outcomes.

“Dr. Lutfi was selected unanimously by a search committee because of his expertise as a surgeon and leader,” said Carol Schneider, President and CEO.  “We are confident that Dr. Lutfi will provide a dynamic addition and will be an asset to the teaching program here at Mercy.”

Specializing in Minimally Invasive Surgery with emphasis on weight loss surgery, Dr. Lutfi currently serves as President of the Illinois Association of Bariatric Surgeons where he has been a member and one of the founders for the past eight years.

“I am excited to serve our hospital and try to take the Department of Surgery to the next level,” said Dr. Lutfi. “With our highly trained specialists and state-of-the-art, cutting-edge technology in our operating rooms, Mercy Hospital should be a destination for care for many, if not, most surgical procedures.”

Dr. Lutfi earned his medical degree at Damascus University School of Medicine, Syria followed by an internship and residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Lutfi then completed a clinical fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery and research fellowship in foregut disorders and obesity at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
